【English Description】
The Art of Miniature: The Birth of a 14mm Cloisonné Bead
This bracelet is composed of multiple 14mm Cloisonné beads, each an independent miniature work of art. It features the classic “Eternal Blossoms” pattern, inspired by the collections of the Yonghegong Lama Temple, and is entirely hand-wired, symbolizing a condensation of all auspicious blessings.
Forged by Mastery: The Adherence to 108 Steps
-
The Ingenuity of Wire Inlay: This is the most skill-intensive stage. Using hair-thin metal wires, the artisan must shape the contours of various flowers on the tiny copper base, with each segment perfectly soldered to form a miniature floral tapestry. As Master Zhong Liansheng, a national inheritor, stated, working on such a small scale means “a discrepancy of even 0.5 millimeters is unacceptable.”
-
The Charm of Enamel Filling: “Dian Lan” is the coloring process. Artisans use special tools to painstakingly fill the compartments with mineral enamel glazes. To achieve ideal color gradients, multiple shades of each hue are blended and transitioned within the tiny spaces. This filling and firing process is repeated three to four times until the enamel sits perfectly flush with the wires.
-
The Peril of Firing: After each enamel filling, the bead must be fired in a kiln at high temperatures. The glaze shrinks upon firing, necessitating the repetitive cycle of filling and firing, a process traditionally known as “Three Firings, Nine Transformations.” Any deviation in temperature or timing can cause the bead to crack or discolor, nullifying all prior effort.
-
Polishing and Gilding: The freshly fired bead surface is uneven. It undergoes “solid-ground polishing” with progressively finer stones to reveal a soft, jade-like luster. Finally, the exposed metal wires are plated with gold to prevent tarnishing and enhance its luxurious splendor.
A Legacy of Value: A Wearable Heirloom
This piece carries the weight of 600 years of imperial craftsmanship. Recognized as one of the “Four Great Dan” of Chinese arts, a pinnacle of the “Eight Extraordinary Crafts of Yanjing,” and inscribed among the first cohort of China’s National Intangible Cultural Heritage, its creation involves 108 meticulous steps and takes 2-3 months to complete (surpassing the 72 steps for porcelain), earning it the title “the epitome of traditional craftsmanship.” This is not merely a bracelet; it is a wearable heirloom, a piece of art worthy of collection.
